EXCERPT: "Men who view themselves as essentially heart healthy are more likely to be so than others who fret over a perceived precarious cardiovascular status. Those who rated their risk as lower than average were 60% less likely to die within 15 years than those who thought they had an average or elevated risk, even after controlling for actual cardiovascular risk (HR 0.4, 95% CI 0.2 to 0.8), Robert Gramling, M.D., D.Sc., of the University of Rochester, and colleagues reported in the July/August issue of the Annals of Family Medicine. Optimistic women, on the other hand, had no such reduced mortality risk (HR 1.5, 95% CI 0.8 to 2.8)." more
